Jill J. Burns
current work is made of porcelain, with handbuilt
and wheel thrown parts. Each
piece is embellished with a design using an ancient
Korean technique called mishima. When the
clay has stiffened the image is carved and a dark
slip is inlayed into the recessed areas. After the
clay has dried, the excess slip is removed and the
design in revealed. The images are a playful
interpretation of 19th century botanical and animals
plates. The pieces are fully functional and
can be used in the microwave and the dishwasher.
Jill received a Bachelors of Fine Arts in 1981. After many
years working in the museum field and
studying ceramics part time she decided to
embark on an artist-in-residency at the Worcester
Center for Crafts and devoted two years of independent
study to pottery. After completing the
residency she co-founded The Fire Works, a studio
and community of ceramic artists, where she
works full time on her craft.
